2005 Château Greysac

I've written about several wines I've found on sale recently. In this economy, a lot of stuff gets marked down. Sometimes unscrupulous retailers are trying to shuffle off spoiled product on an unsuspecting populace, but other times there are incredible bargains to be found. For example: Wolfchase Wine & Spirits was recently selling 2005 Château Greysac for $11 a bottle. Greysac is generally an inexpensive Bordeaux, but I've paid $20 for it in the past and been happy with it. At $11, for the 2005 vintage, it's practically robbery.

The wine is 13% abv and comprised of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Aromas of black cherry, licorice, tomato leaves. Black cherry flavors dominate, with a clear and clean finish. Light body, a little on the tart side at first, but it mellows out with breathing. Medium tannins. Great match for any red meat and potatoes combination you could possibly imagine.

If you're looking to buy your first Bordeaux, or want an enjoyable wine of the style the Brits called a "good claret", this is the wine for you.

that is a good deal, i have tried this wine before and it was a good one. Is this a wine i could buy in bulk and store for a long time?

At $11 it's practically robbery?

Benito, have you considered the possibility that the original asking price may have been the robbery? ;)

Anne,

I don't know how much of it is still out there, but I'm sure it would be good for another few years. It's not going to be particularly valuable in the future. It's really nice right now, though, so drink up!

Thomas,

Profit margins on this one were very slim--it was a couple of cases being cleaned out of a warehouse and moved mostly to get them out of the way. I thought it was a good deal in the past when I paid $20. $30 would be steep. :)

A lot of clearance wines are a bad bet, because they were never meant to stick around for a few years, or have inferior corks, or were just bad wines that never moved off the shelf. This was a rare confluence of positives.

Cheers,
Benito

Ben my friend. This wine came from Chateau and Estates. They cleared the deck on all of their bordeaux wines in stock. In fact they got out of the wine business all together. The pricing on this wine was unreal and I've been in the business for over 15 years. This was one of the best buys, but there were others that were really crazy in the classified grownths. I agree with you at $11 I'd drink all day!

Mike,

Thanks for the clarification! When I saw it I thought it must have been a mistake, or Greysac had started putting out a bargain second line or something. John gave me a few of the details but it was a couple of months ago.

Cheers,
Benito
